AFP-Kansas Opposes Proposed $128 Million Evergy Rate Increase

TOPEKA, KS – Americans for Prosperity–Kansas (AFP-KS) criticized a proposed a proposed $128 million energy rate increase on Tuesday by Evergy, calling the move a money grab by a state-backed energy monopoly.

If approved, the rate hike would result in an overall increase of 9.6% for homeowners, 8.41% for most businesses, and 9.23% for schools and churches.

AFP-KS calls on lawmakers to break the monopoly structure in Kansas’s energy market and introduce reforms that allow for true competition and lower prices. No rate increase is acceptable at a time when Kansans are already overwhelmed by rising energy and living costs.

AFP-KS State Director Liz Patton released the following statement:

“This deal is no win for Kansans. While shaving $68 million off Evergy’s original ask might sound like progress, any increase at all is unjustifiable. This isn’t about helping consumers. It is about padding the salaries of a state-sanctioned monopoly at the public’s expense. This is a rigged system, and the Kansas Corporation Commission should reject this proposal outright.”
